TIPS FOR CREATING A TYPE CENTERED LAYOUT

HOW TO | CREATE A TYPE CENTERED SCRAPBOOK LAYOUT

HI ALL! THIS WEEK I'M SHARING WITH YOU 5 TIPS TO CREATE A LAYOUT THAT, YOU GUESSED IT - DOESN'T HAVE ANY PHOTOS! THIS WEEK, MY LAYOUT TITLED 'FALL HAS FALLEN' IS A TYPE CENTERED LAYOUT THAT FEATURES A QUICK LITTLE POEM I WROTE ABOUT THE CHANGING SEASONS. I HAVE A COUPLE TIPS FOR YOU TO PUT YOUR OWN WRITING - ALBEIT STORIES, POEMS OR JUST PLAIN NOTES - INTO ACTION SO YOU TOO CAN GET YOUR TYPE CENTERED LAYOUTS ON.

TIP NO. 1 - MAKE YOUR TITLE BOLD

HERE, I'VE BALANCED MY SMALLER WRITING (THE POEM) BY KEEPING MY TITLE NICE AND BOLD. NOT ONLY IS IT SIZED LARGE TO BALANCE, BUT IT'S BOLD COLOR CHOICES MAKES IT EVEN MORE IN YOUR FACE. WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE ANY PICTURES, YOU NEED SOMETHING ELSE TO FILL SPACE EFFECTIVELY (AND WITH PURPOSE) AND WHY NOT MAKE YOUR TITLE DO THE JOB?

TIP NO. 2 - USE GRAPHIC ELEMENTS WISELY

IN MY LAYOUT, I USED THE GRAPHIC ELEMENT OF WATERCOLOR STROKES AND FALLING WOOD VENEER LEAVES. I USED THEM SPARINGLY BUT IN A LARGE SCALE SO THAT MY PAGE HAD NICE FLOW AND BALANCE TO IT. KEEP IT SIMPLE, AND MAKE SURE THERE'S A REASON YOU'RE PLACING THE ITEMS ON THE PAGE! EVERYTHING WORKS BETTER WHEN IT MAKES SENSE FOR THE VIEWER  (EVEN IF THE VIEWER IS JUST YOU).

TIP NO. 3 - ALIGN ALIGN ALIGN!

HERE, I'VE USED A CENTRAL POINT OF ALIGNMENT BETWEEN MY TEXT AND MY TITLE WITH A SMALL GUTTER IN BETWEEN FOR EMPHASIS. KEEPING THINGS CLEAN AND ALIGNED WILL HELP THE OVERALL FEEL OF YOUR PAGE TO BE NEATER AND FRESHER - A WIN WIN IN MY BOOK! BE SURE TO TRY OUT LOTS OF DIFFERENT POINTS OF ALIGNMENT TOO, THIS ONE MAY NOT WORK FOR YOU BUT I'M SURE THERE'S ONE OUT THERE THAT WILL :).

TIP NO. 4 - LEAVE WHITE SPACE

A LITTLE WHITE SPACE NEVER HURT ANYONE, AND IF YOU UTILIZE IT EFFECTIVELY, IT CAN MAKE JUST AS MUCH IMPACT AS THE CONTENT. HERE, I'VE CREATED MOVEMENT WITH MY GRAPHIC ELEMENTS AND TEXT, AND LEFT EVERYTHING ELSE WHITE SPACE SO YOUR EYE HAS SOMEWHERE TO REST - OTHERWISE YOUR PAGES CAN GET VERY BUSY!

TIP NO. 5 - DON'T BE AFRAID TO MIX TYPE

HERE, I HAVE A WHIMSICAL 'TYPEWRITER' FONT FOR MY BODY OF TEXT, AND MY TRUSTY FAVE - HELVETICA NEUE FOR MY TITLE. JUST GET IN YOUR FONT BOOK AND TEST A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT TYPEFACES. IT'S TOTALLY COOL TO GO A LITTLE CRAZY - IT IS YOUR SCRAPBOOK, AFTER ALL! JUST DO WHAT YOU LIKE AND THINK WORKS WELL TO COMMUNICATE YOUR STORY.
