ORGANIZE YOUR PHOTOS

HOW TO | PREP AND PRINT PHOTOS FOR PROJECT LIFE + FREEBIES | THE PAPER CURATOR

NOW THIS IS GOING TO BE QUITE PERSONAL, SO FEEL FREE TO ORGANIZE YOUR PHOTOS HOWEVER YOU FEEL WORKS BEST FOR YOU! WHAT I'VE FOUND WORKS BEST FOR ME - SINCE MOST OF THE IMAGES I TAKE ARE WITH MY IPHONE -  IS TO TRANSFER THEM QUICKLY FROM MY IPHONE TO MY COMPUTER USING DROPBOX (THEIR CAROUSEL FEATURE WORKS SEAMLESSLY!). I THEN DRAG ALL THE IMAGES TO THEIR CORRESPONDING FOLDER. I KEEP FOLDERS FOR EACH MONTH AND THEN AT THE END OF THE YEAR I'LL DRAG THEM INTO A YEAR FOLDER THAT I'LL CREATE AT THAT TIME. BECAUSE I'M ACCESSING EACH MONTH QUITE FREQUENTLY, I DON'T DRAG THEM INTO A YEARLY FOLDER UNTIL THE END OF DECEMBER. ALSO NOTE, FOR CONVENIENCE, I PLACE THE THREE TO FOUR MOST CURRENT MONTHS IN MY SHORTCUTS MENU ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE AS WELL SO I CAN DRAG FROM DROPBOX AND USE THEM AS I'M WORKING ON PROJECT LIFE!

PICK YOUR PHOTOS

ONCE YOU'VE PICKED THE WEEK YOU'RE GOING TO BE WORKING ON, GO THROUGH YOUR PHOTOS FROM THE CORRESPONDING DATES AND PULL YOUR FAVORITES. I TRY AND SELECT AT LEAST ONE PHOTO FROM EACH DAY OF MY WEEK BUT I OFTENTIMES HAVE MORE OR LESS SO I JUST PULL WHAT I WANT TO INCLUDE AND OPEN THEM IN PHOTOSHOP.

NOTE: I ALSO USE THE TAGGING FEATURE QUITE OFTEN TO MARK THE IMAGES I'M USING FOR MY PROJECT LIFE. NOTICE HERE, I'VE MARKED THE SELECTED IMAGE WITH A BLUE TAG WHICH IS MY PROJECT LIFE COLOR. THIS HELPS ME LATER ON SO THAT I KNOW WHICH ONES I'VE USED SO I CAN AVOID SCRAPBOOKING THEM IF I DON'T WANT TO HAVE REPLICAS IN MY ALBUM - AND SOMETIMES THEY'RE JUST THE MOST FANTASTIC IMAGE AND I WANT TO HIGHLIGHT IT IN A SCRAPBOOK PAGE ANYWAYS, IT JUST DEPENDS HOW I FEEL!

AS YOU CAN SEE HERE, I'VE OPENED MY IMAGES FROM THE WEEK AND MY TWO TEMPLATES, THE 4X6" TEMPLATE, WHICH FEATURES GROUPED FILES FOR ALL THE VARIOUS SIZES I'D WANT TO PRINT, AND A 6X12" TEMPLATE FOR THOSE FULL PAGE FEATURES AND ANYTHING LARGER THAN A 4X6" PRINT SIZE.

TO GET READY TO PRINT, WHY DON'T YOU GRAB MY FREE DOWNLOAD OF THE TWO TEMPLATES BY CLICKING THE BUTTON BELOW! IF YOU'RE UNSURE HOW TO USE PHOTOSHOP TEMPLATES, BE SURE TO WATCH MY VIDEO TUTORIAL!

PREP A SKETCH

HOW TO | PREP AND PRINT PHOTOS FOR PROJECT LIFE + FREEBIES | THE PAPER CURATOR

EACH WEEK I ALWAYS BEGIN BY DRAWING A SPREAD AND LABELLING IT WITH THE WEEK NUMBER AND DATES. I OFTEN PREP THESE IN MY SKETCHBOOK OR PLANNER AHEAD OF TIME AND EVEN THOUGH I HAVE A TEMPLATE TO PRINT FROM THE COMPUTER, SOMETIMES IT JUST FEELS NICE TO SKETCH IT OUT BY HAND! FEEL FREE TO DO THIS HOWEVER YOU THINK WORKS BEST FOR YOU, BUT I DO SUGGEST HAVING ONE BECAUSE IT WILL HELP YOU IN THE FURTHER STEPS OF THE PROCESS!

PICTURE NUMBERS AND EVENTS

HOW TO | PREP AND PRINT PHOTOS FOR PROJECT LIFE + FREEBIES | THE PAPER CURATOR

HOW TO | PREP AND PRINT PHOTOS FOR PROJECT LIFE + FREEBIES | THE PAPER CURATOR

AT THIS STAGE YOU'LL WANT TO MAKE A NOTE OF HOW MANY PICTURES YOU HAVE AND WHAT DATES THEY'RE FROM. I DO THIS BY SIMPLY COUNTING THE NUMBER OF PICTURES I HAVE OPEN IN PHOTOSHOP.

HOW TO | PREP AND PRINT PHOTOS FOR PROJECT LIFE + FREEBIES | THE PAPER CURATOR

HOW TO | PREP AND PRINT PHOTOS FOR PROJECT LIFE + FREEBIES | THE PAPER CURATOR

TAKE NOTE OF ANY SPECIAL EVENTS THAT OCCURRED DURING THE WEEK BECAUSE YOU MAY WANT TO DOCUMENT THEM IN A SPECIAL WAY OR INSERT.

AT THIS TIME YOU'LL WANT TO PULL OUT THE 6X12 LAYOUT CHEAT SHEET (SEEN ON THE RIGHT) THAT I'M PROVIDING AS A FREE DOWNLOAD (JUST CLICK THE BUTTON BELOW FOR YOURS!). THIS CHEAT SHEET IS GREAT BECAUSE IT ALLOWS YOU TO SEE WHAT TYPE OF LAYOUT WORKS FOR THE NUMBER OF PHOTOS YOU HAVE! IT ALSO LETS YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE AN ODD NUMBER WHETHER YOU NEED TO CUT AN IMAGE OR TWO, AND HOW MANY PAGES YOU'LL NEED! SO AS I'VE NOTED ON MY SKETCH, I HAVE 5 PHOTOS FOR THE 15TH - 17TH, I HAVE 10 PHOTOS FOR MY BIRTHDAY (WHICH I WANT TO DO AS A SPECIAL INSERT), AND I HAVE ANOTHER 20 IMAGES/MEMORABILIA FROM MY WEEKEND TRIP FOR ANOTHER PAGE. AFTER LOOKING AT ALL THIS I'VE SKETCHED OUT MORE PAGES SINCE THIS WEEK WON'T JUST BE ONE SPREAD!

SKETCH THE LAYOUTS

WITH NUMBERS AND CHEAT SHEET IN HAND, LOOK CRITICALLY AT THE TYPES OF PHOTOS YOU HAVE, AND HOW YOU WANT TO FEATURE THEM. FOR MY FIRST PAGE I HAVE 5 IMAGES SO I'M MAKING MY FIRST POCKET THE USUAL 4"X6" TITLE POCKET, AND THEN I'M SPLITTING THE BOTTOM TWO INTO 3"X4" VERTICAL POCKETS TO ACCOMMODATE MY OTHER 4 IMAGES! I CONTINUE THIS PROCESS FOR EACH OF THE GROUPING OF PHOTOS AND DECIDE UPON HAVING THREE FULL PAGE IMAGES, ONE PAGE OF 3" SQUARES, AND ANOTHER PAGE OF 2" SQUARES IN ADDITION TO MY ORIGINAL PAGE AS YOU CAN SEE NOTED ABOVE.

CLIP YOUR PHOTOS

NOW BACK IN PHOTOSHOP - YOU'LL WANT TO DRAG YOUR PICTURES INTO THE APPROPRIATE TEMPLATE (4X6 OR 6X12) AND CLIP THEM TO THE APPROPRIATE SIZED SHAPE. MY FIRST PICTURE (ABOVE) IS 4" X 6" SO I SIMPLY CLIPPED IT TO THE FULL SHAPE AND WAS DONE! MY NEXT TWO IMAGES WILL BE 3" X 4" SO I'VE CLIPPED THEM (BELOW) WITHIN THE 3X4" GROUP TO THEIR APPROPRIATE LEFT AND RIGHT LAYERS AND THEY WERE DONE AS WELL. NOTE: I PLACED THEM AS I WANT THEM TO BE SEEN IN MY FINISHED LAYOUT SO IT'S EASIER TO KEEP TRACK!

SAVE TO PRINT

HOW TO | PREP AND PRINT PHOTOS FOR PROJECT LIFE + FREEBIES | THE PAPER CURATOR

ONCE YOU'VE CLIPPED ONE IMAGE, YOU'LL WANT TO SAVE IT! I SAVE ALL MINE IN ONE LOCATION AND NAME THEM WITH THE WEEK NUMBER AND DATE SO I CAN EASILY REFERENCE THEM IF I NEED TO. I ALSO SAVE THEM IN JPEG FORM BECAUSE AT THIS STAGE, ALL I'M DOING IS PRINTING AND THERE'S NO NEED FOR HUGE .PSD FILES!

FILL IN YOUR SKETCH

HOW TO | PREP AND PRINT PHOTOS FOR PROJECT LIFE + FREEBIES | THE PAPER CURATOR

NOW I DO THIS AS I SAVE THE IMAGES - I GO INTO MY SKETCH AND SIMPLY WRITE A DESCRIPTION OR DO A LITTLE DOODLE ON MY LAYOUT SKETCH THAT HELPS ME KEEP TRACK OF WHICH PHOTOS GO IN WHICH SPOTS. I ALSO WRITE THE DATE OF THE PHOTO AND CIRCLE IT SO THAT I HAVE THAT INFORMATION ALL AT MY FINGERTIPS.

PRINT IN BATCHES

NOW I OPEN A WEEK AT A TIME AND PRINT ALL THE 4"X6" PHOTOS FIRST, THEN THE 6"X12" PHOTOS SECOND. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE HAVING A WIDE FORMAT PRINTER AT HOME (I USE THE EPSON WF-7510) AND I SIMPLY PRINT MY FULL PAGE IMAGES ON 11" X 17" PAPER. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THOSE CAPABILITIES, PERSNICKETY PRINTS CAN PRINT THAT SIZE FOR YOU AND THEY HAVE AMAZING ARCHIVAL QUALITY EXCELLENT FOR ALL US SCRAPBOOKERS! FOR MY 4" X 6" PRINTS I LOVE THE HP ADVANCED PHOTO PAPER IN GLOSSY. THE COLOR RETURN IS EXCELLENT AND IT'S WELL PRICED. ALSO, SINCE I'M PRINTING AT HOME, IF I MESS UP A PRINT (TRYING TO STAMP OR JOURNAL ETC), I CAN SIMPLY RE-PRINT IT QUICKLY WHICH IS FABULOUS!

HOW TO | PREP AND PRINT PHOTOS FOR PROJECT LIFE + FREEBIES | THE PAPER CURATOR

HOW TO | PREP AND PRINT PHOTOS FOR PROJECT LIFE + FREEBIES | THE PAPER CURATOR

ONCE I FINISH PRINTING THE WEEK, I MARK THEM WITH A TAG IN MY FINDER WINDOW TO DENOTE THAT THEY'VE BEEN PRINTED. I MARK THE 6X12'S WITH A PURPLE DOT BEFORE PRINTING SO I ONLY PRINT THE 4X6'S FIRST, AND THEN WHEN EVERYTHING IS COMPLETED I MARK THE ENTIRE WEEK WITH A YELLOW DOT. IT HELPS ME KEEP UP TO DATE WITH WHAT'S PREPPED, AND WHAT'S ACTUALLY PRINTED!

TRIM PHOTOS

ONE OF THE REASONS I CHOOSE TO PRINT THE MAJORITY OF MY PICTURES ON 4" X 6" PAPER IS THAT IT LESSENS THE AMOUNT OF TRIMMING I HAVE TO DO. WHEN I CREATE THESE HUGE COLLAGES ON LARGE PAPER IT ENDS UP TAKING ME LONGER, BOTH TO LAY OUT, AND TO TRIM SO I'VE FOUND STICKING TO 4" X 6" HAS HELPED ME TREMENDOUSLY!

NOW'S THE TIME TO GRAB YOUR PHOTOS AND TRIM THEM. YOU CAN DO THIS WITH A PAPER TRIMMER OR GOOD OLD FASHIONED SCISSORS. I USE BOTH AND IT DEPENDS ON MY MOOD THAT DAY! THIS IS THE LAST STEP BEFORE ACTUALLY BEGINNING YOUR PHYSICAL SPREAD.

I TRY TO KEEP THE PHOTOS STACKED IN ORDER BUT SOMETIMES YOU JUST NEVER KNOW! WHEN I GO TO START PUTTING MY SPREAD TOGETHER IS THE TIME WHEN I LOVE REFERENCING MY COMPLETED SKETCH TO ENSURE I HAVE THE CORRECT PLACEMENT FOR EACH OF MY PHOTOS.

NOTE: I ESPECIALLY LOVE THE NEW FUSE TOOL BECAUSE IT ALLOWS ME THE INCREDIBLE FLEXIBILITY TO CREATE ANY LAYOUT I WANT WITH EACH POCKET PAGE, AND I CAN TAILOR THEM TO FIT THE ASSORTMENT OF PHOTOS I HAVE EACH WEEK! (JUST LOOK AT THE VARIETY I CAN ACHIEVE WITH IT SHOWN IN THE CHEAT SHEET).
